Douglas E. Williams, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Williams currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of ZymoGenetics and as a member of the company's Board of Directors. He previously served as President from July 2007 to January 2009. He joined ZymoGenetics in 2004 as Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President and was responsible for the company's research and development programs. Dr. Williams has held senior level positions at a number of notable biotechnology companies, including Seattle Genetics, Immunex, Amgen and Genesis Research and Development, a New Zealand based biotechnology company. As Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Immunex, Dr. Williams played a significant role in the discovery and early development of Enbrel, the first biologic approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, Dr. Williams was a member of Immunex Corporation's Board of Directors. Before entering the biotechnology industry, Dr. Williams served on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine and worked in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute.
Dr. Williams earned a B.S. magna cum laude in Biological Sciences from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Heather L. Franklin
Senior Vice President, Business Development
Heather L. Franklin was named Senior Vice President, Business Development in June, 2008. Prior to that, she was Vice President, Business Development from January 2005 to June 2008, Senior Director, Strategic Alliance Management from July 2003 to January 2005 and Director, Strategic Alliance Management from January 2002 to July 2003. In these roles she was instrumental in negotiating and managing major partnerships with Novo Nordisk, Merck Serono, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Bayer. Ms. Franklin joined ZymoGenetics in January, 2001 as Director, Research Project Management to establish a research project management system after holding roles of increasing responsibility in clinical and research project management at Amgen and Targeted Genetics from 1994 to 2001. She started her career in research roles at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and Targeted Genetics.
Ms. Franklin received a B.S. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, M.S. from the University of Washington and an M.B.A from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Darren R. Hamby
Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Corporate Services
Darren Hamby was appointed Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Corporate Services in May 2009. Previously, Mr. Hamby served as Senior Vice President, Human Resources from July 2007 to April 2009, as Vice President, Human Resources from August 2004 to June 2007, as Senior Director, Human Resources from September 2002 to July 2004, and as Director, Human Resources from July 2000 to August 2002. Mr. Hamby joined ZymoGenetics in September 1997 to manage compensation and employee benefit programs. From 1987 to 1997, Mr. Hamby held human resources positions of increasing responsibility with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle.
Mr. Hamby earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with an emphasis in human resources management, and an M.B.A. from Pacific Lutheran University.
James A. Johnson
Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Secretary and Treasurer
Mr. Johnson joined ZymoGenetics in February 2001 as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, bringing over 20 years of financial experience to the company. Prior to joining ZymoGenetics, he held numerous positions at Targeted Genetics Corporation, most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, where he led private and public offerings, as well as establishing a joint venture program to advance the company's technology platforms. Other previous positions include Vice President of Finance at Immunex Corporation, Vice President and Controller at Safeco Properties, Inc., and Senior Auditor at Arthur Young.
Mr. Johnson received a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington.
Dennis M. Miller, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, Research and Preclinical Development
Dr. Miller was named Senior Vice President, Research and Preclinical Development in September 2009. Dr. Miller has been with ZymoGenetics since 2005 working in positions within the Research and Development organization. Most recently, he served as Vice President, Preclinical Development. Before joining ZymoGenetics, Dr. Miller worked for Seattle Genetics. He has also worked at Amgen, Nycomed R&D and Sterling Winthrop in a variety of preclinical and clinical development roles, with contributions to a number of marketed products, including interferon alfacon1, palifermin, anakinra, and romiplostim.
Before entering the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Miller completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington in the Department of Environmental Health. Dr. Miller received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Utah State University.
Eleanor L. Ramos, M.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Eleanor L. Ramos was named Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer in June 2009. She joined ZymoGenetics in January 2007 as Vice President, Clinical Research, Immunology and Inflammation and became Vice President, Clinical Development in 2008. Prior to joining ZymoGenetics, Dr. Ramos held senior positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Immune Tolerance Network, the latter of which involved the management of a multidisciplinary group involved in the design and execution of clinical trials in autoimmunity, asthma, allergy and transplantation. She has also contributed to the development of CellCept and Zenapax in solid organ transplantation while at Roche Global Development, Palo Alto, CA. Dr. Ramos has also held a number of academic appointments at Harvard Medical School, University of Florida, Yale University and University of California, San Francisco. Before making the move to industry, Dr. Ramos, as a board-certified Internist with a sub-specialty in Nephrology, was Director of the Renal Transplant Services at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and University of Florida, Gainesville.
Dr. Ramos earned a B.S. summa cum laude in Chemistry from Tufts University and received her medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha distinction from Tufts Medical School. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston and fellowship in Nephrology/Transplant Immunology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston.
Stephen W. Zaruby
President
Stephen W. Zaruby has served as President of ZymoGenetics since January 2, 2009. Previously Mr. Zaruby served as Vice President, Global Head, Hospital/Surgical Business Unit, Haematology/Cardiology, with Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. In that role, he was the global strategic and U.S. operational head for hospital, surgical and related specialty products. Prior to that, he served as Director, Global Strategic Marketing for Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, where he oversaw global strategic marketing and commercialization platforms for the quinolone franchise. Previously, Mr. Zaruby held several other sales, marketing and product development positions within Bayer HealthCare and its affiliates.
Mr. Zaruby earned a B.S. with Honors in Cellular, Molecular, and Microbiology from the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta.
