BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
The discovery and development of therapeutic proteins depends on the ability to determine the biological functions of a novel gene. These findings enable the selection of the most relevant medical indications for clinical development. Biological assessment is a key strength of ZymoGenetics.
As soon as we identify a promising gene and protein sequence, our molecular and cellular biologists design a panel of screens to help reveal the biology of the protein. Both genetic and biochemical approaches are applied to this task: the development of transgenic and knockout model systems; the use of adenovirus for protein over-expression; and the generation of recombinant protein and antibodies. We have established a wide range of assays to detect biological activity with possible therapeutic application in immunology, oncology, cardiovascular biology, endocrinology, and tissue regeneration.
Another important core technology developed in-house is the pairing of novel ligands and their receptors. The discovery of a receptor and where it is expressed allows a rapid identification of target tissues for analysis and provides important insights into the underlying biology.
As the biology of a protein emerges and its clinically relevant function(s) become evident, the company develops appropriate disease models for preclinical studies. Simultaneously, protein chemists characterize lead molecules and design the expression systems needed to supply high quality protein for preclinical experiments. During these later stages of analysis, a team of scientists works together to ensure the seamless transfer of a project from research to development.
